DERPA

As an engineering student at UC Berkeley, I recognized a gap in the extracurricular landscape that needed to be filled. While there were numerous engineering clubs for specific interests, I wanted a space where students could collaborate on any kind of personal project, develop prototyping and manufacturing skills, and engage in engineering in a casual, low-pressure environment. This led me to start Design Engineering and Rapid Prototyping Association (DERPA), a unique registered student organization that embodies the spirit of innovation and hands-on learning.

Fostering Innovation Through Collaboration

DERPA was born out of a simple idea: to create a welcoming community for students passionate about engineering and design, regardless of their experience level. Our club provides a platform for members to work on personal projects, share knowledge, and support each other.

A Hub for Creativity and Skill Development

The heart of DERPA are our weekly meetings, where members gather to work on their projects, exchange ideas, and collaborate. These sessions are complemented by workshops on various prototyping techniques and tools, ensuring that our members are always learning and expanding their skill sets. We also invite industry professionals as guest speakers, offering valuable insights into real-world engineering challenges and innovations.

Hands-On Learning and Practical Experience

One of DERPA’s key strengths is its focus on practical, hands-on experience. Members have access to university makerspaces and workshops, as well as shared tools and equipment owned by members. This access allows students to bring their ideas to life, from initial concept to finished prototype. Our annual participation in the Jacobs Design Expo showcases the incredible projects our members create, highlighting the talent and creativity within our community.

Building a Supportive Community

DERPA’s success lies in its inclusive and supportive environment. We welcome students from all backgrounds and experience levels, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing and mutual support. This collaborative spirit extends to our project documentation, where members can share drawings, schematics, and other valuable resources.

Leadership Opportunities

While DERPA maintains a casual atmosphere, it also offers opportunities for those seeking to develop their leadership skills. Our annually elected officers manage club operations, providing valuable experience in organizational leadership.

Founding and leading DERPA has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It has not only allowed me to create the type of engineering community I always wanted to be part of, but has also provided a platform for countless students to explore their passion for engineering and design. Through DERPA, we’re nurturing the next generation of innovative engineers, one project at a time.
